Deadly pathogen identified as global threat to coral reefs

26 May 2024

Tel Aviv University researchers have identified a water-borne pathogen responsible for mass sea urchin mortalities in the Red Sea, posing a severe threat to global coral reefs. The epidemic has spread to the Indian Ocean, raising concerns of a potential global pandemic. Sea urchins are vital for maintaining ecological balance by feeding on algae that compete with corals for sunlight. Their disappearance can disrupt the delicate ecosystem, leading to widespread coral reef degradation. Urgent action is needed to protect and understand the outbreak's causes.

Hongkongers should avoid touching wild birds amid possible mutation in deadly H5 avian flu virus, expert says

25 May 2024

Hongkongers are being advised to avoid contact with wild birds as the H5 avian flu virus shows signs of mutating and becoming more infectious to mammals, including humans. Recent outbreaks among US dairy cows, previously unaffected by the virus, have raised concerns. Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, an infectious diseases expert, warns that the mutation could lead to human-to-human transmission, potentially surpassing the severity and transmissibility of Covid-19. Two dairy farm workers have already been infected. Hung recommends reporting dead birds and avoiding feeding pigeons, as they may carry the virus. Hong Kong will ban pigeon feeding from August 1. Hung also suggests genetic mutations in bacteria may explain the global rise in whooping cough cases, calling for revised vaccines. Hong Kong has seen a significant increase in whooping cough cases, with 28 reported this year compared to 15 in 2023.

HIV, viral hepatitis, and STIs remain major public health challenges, causing 2.5 million deaths yearly. In 2022, syphilis cases rose by over one million, mainly in the Americas and Africa. This, along with limited progress in reducing HIV and viral hepatitis infections, threatens health targets. Multi-resistant gonorrhea and persistent hepatitis B and C cases are also concerning. However, efforts to expand services and eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis show promise, with Namibia leading in triple elimination progress.

Extreme Heatwaves in South and Southeast Asia are a Sign of Disasters to Come

18 May 2024

Since April 2024, extensive regions of south and south-east Asia have been experiencing prolonged extreme heat, impacting densely populated areas. The heatwaves have led to school closures and health risks, with temperatures exceeding the core human body temperature. The combination of high temperatures and increasing humidity amplifies the danger, hindering the body's cooling mechanisms. This extreme heat poses a greater threat than similar temperatures in desert regions. Millions of people in south and south-east Asia have faced health risks and reduced labor productivity due to these conditions during April and May.

Wildlife crime inflicts significant harm on nature, livelihoods, public health, and the fight against climate change. While progress has been made in countering poaching for some iconic species, such as elephants and rhinoceroses, the overall situation remains bleak for numerous protected plants and animals. Illegal trade affects thousands of species, with millions of items seized globally. Wildlife trafficking often goes unnoticed, despite its role in species extinction and disease risks. Powerful organized crime groups exploit ecosystems, necessitating targeted interventions and investment in monitoring. Comprehensive strategies, including policy focus, market regulations, and law enforcement, have yielded positive results but require sustained efforts.

Europe: Report highlights direct link between pandemic and childhood obesity

1 May 2024

The findings of a survey conducted in 17 countries reveal a concerning trend among children aged seven to nine. Increased screen time and decreased outdoor playtime align with an observed rise in overweight children. The survey, spanning from 2021 to 2023 and involving over 50,000 children, emphasizes the urgency of taking action to improve nutrition and physical activity. The World Health Organization recommends measures such as marketing restrictions, taxes on unhealthy products, and school-based programs to address childhood obesity. The data from this survey can inform policy improvements and strategies for future emergencies.
