The epidemic has spread to the Indian Ocean, raising concerns of a potential global pandemic. Sea urchins are vital for maintaining ecological balance by feeding on algae that compete with corals for sunlight. Their disappearance can disrupt the delicate ecosystem, leading to widespread coral reef degradation. Urgent action is needed to protect and understand the outbreak's causes.
Hongkongers should avoid touching wild birds amid possible mutation in deadly H5 avian flu virus, expert says

Hongkongers are being advised to avoid contact with wild birds as the H5 avian flu virus shows signs of mutating and becoming more infectious to mammals, including humans. Recent outbreaks among US dairy cows, previously unaffected by the virus, have raised concerns. Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, an infectious diseases expert, warns that the mutation could lead to human-to-human transmission, potentially surpassing the severity and transmissibility of Covid-19. Two dairy farm workers have already been infected. Hung recommends reporting dead birds and avoiding feeding pigeons, as they may carry the virus. Hong Kong will ban pigeon feeding from August 1. Hung also suggests genetic mutations in bacteria may explain the global rise in whooping cough cases, calling for revised vaccines. Hong Kong has seen a significant increase in whooping cough cases, with 28 reported this year compared to 15 in 2023.

WHO reports major increase in sexually transmitted infections

This, along with limited progress in reducing HIV and viral hepatitis infections, threatens health targets. Multi-resistant gonorrhea and persistent hepatitis B and C cases are also concerning. However, efforts to expand services and eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis show promise, with Namibia leading in triple elimination progress.
